We offer testing for ADHD, Autism, and Learning Disabilities

AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS

Testing for autism includes a parent clinical interview, standardized rating scales, and administration of the ADOS-2.  Further  assessment may be needed to determine if there is also suspected learning or attention concerns. Our testing also includes a detailed assessment of social skills functioning, so that we can target areas in need of intervention.

Does my child have a learning disability such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia?

Dyslexia is so much more than the common misconception of letter or number reversals.  Children with dyslexia can have trouble sounding out and blending words. They often have phonemic awareness difficulties. Sight words don't seem to stick, even though they may be able to pass their spelling tests.  In other types of dyslexia, sounding out words is not the problem, instead, they rush through and mistake the first letter of a word for a visually similar word.  For children with dyslexia, reading comprehension often suffers because they misread and substitute many common words for other words (e.g., these for tree).

Dysgraphia is a disorder of written language.  Children with dysgraphia have difficulty with letter formations, often misspell the same word different ways, frequent cross outs, upper case mixed with lower case letters, handwriting is sloppy or illegible, and they express frustration with the writing process.

Dyscalcula is a math disorder.  Children may have difficulty learning their math facts, reverse their numbers (sometimes not always), and have trouble with math story problems.

We conduct testing for dyslexia, dysgraphia, and/or dyscalculia to find out why a child is struggling academically and provide you with interventions on what steps to take next.

ATTENTION-DEFICIT/HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (AD/HD)

There are 3 subtypes of ADHD:

ADHD Inattentive Type (formerly known as ADD)

ADHD Hyperactive-Impulsive Type

ADHD Combined Type (Inattentive, Hyperactive, Impulsive symptoms combined)

Some common symptoms include trouble focusing, inattentive, forgetful, daydreaming, or even "lazy" and "unmotivated".  These are some terms used to describe this condition.  ADHD is most commonly diagnosed before the age of 7, but if you have a mild version you may have gone through grade school and even most of your life without a formal diagnosis.  The inattentive type is commonly known as ADD, but it's actually an outdated term, the correct form is "ADHD Inattentive Type".  It's defined by having difficulty with focus, a short attention span, difficulty starting and completing work.  Add in fidgeting, difficulty sitting still, restlessness, and overactive, interrupting others, impulsive, or "always on the go" and that describes the hyperactive-inattentive type.  So how do you know if you need to be tested?  If your symptoms are interfering with your daily life (e.g., work, school, home) and they are bothersome to you, then it may be worth testing.  Our Katy psychologists conduct testing screenings for ADD/ADHD. More comprehensive testing for ADD/ADHD when a differential diagnosis may be needed or if you need a current evaluation to justify ACT, SAT, GRE, or LSAT accommodations (see ADHD Comprehensive Evaluation below).

ADHD TESTING

ADHD can be evaluated using a thorough clinical interview, computerized performance test (CPT) and parent, teacher, and spouse/close friend or relative) input.  We obtain full background history, current concerns, and also assessing executive functioning skills (ability to plan ahead, maintain attention to task, organize, complete tasks, etc.) Testing for ADHD includes a formal written report complete with a diagnosis (if applicable) and recommendations based on your specific needs.  For school age children,  this can lead to accommodations within the classroom setting, which can be used to initiate Section 504 plans if needed). For adults, it includes recommendations for improving daily life functioning. ADHD testing can be conducted for ages 4 through adults.

Rates for ADHD testing at Katy Psychological Services, PLLC start at $365 after your initial diagnostic interview is conducted.

ADHD COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION

Executive functioning deficits are common in individuals with ADHD.  A deeper examination of working memory, sustained attention, organizational skills, processing speed, emotional functioning, and problem-solving is suggested for those who want a more detailed break down as to what their weaknesses are and how to make them better.  Formal testing is also useful if children need an individualized educational plan for them at school, or for high school/college students who need specific documentation for SAT/ACT accommodations for testing or when they enter college.  (The College Board has specific testing requirements.  Katy Psychological Services only uses tests that the Board accepts).

Pricing ranges based on the number of hours needed for testing, which can be from 3-5 hours.

Note:  ADHD evaluations and testing for learning disabilities are not a covered benefit under insurance plans.  Please check with your specific plan for details. We can provide you with a detailed medical receipt to seek reimbursement for any "out of network" benefits you can claim from your insurance provider if/when applicable.   The pricing reflects an individually tailored evaluation, and we will work with you as much as we possibly can to meet your budget. We also accept most HSA cards.
